Cognitive behavioral treatment includes dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT). Positive behavioral improvements are encouraged while trying to recognize and alter harmful thought patterns in cognitive behavioral therapy. Suicidal and other self-destructive behaviors may be treated with DBT. It gives patients the tools they need to deal with bad behaviors and stop them. The term "dialectical" refers to the belief that acceptance and transformation, two opposites in therapy, work better together than they do separately. A distinctive feature of DBT is its emphasis on accepting a patient's experience as a means of reassuring them and balancing the work required to eliminate harmful habits. Dialectical behavioral therapy focuses on individuals who are at high risk and difficult to cure. Many times, these individuals have many diagnoses. DBT was first developed to help individuals with borderline personality disorder and suicidal conduct. However, it has been modified to address other mental health issues that put a person's safety, relationships, ability to work, and emotional wellbeing at risk. A severe emotional discomfort is a symptom of borderline personality disorder. Patients may experience sudden mood swings, acute hostility, and heightened rejection sensitivity.
